I take every opportunity to make every event a homeschool lesson. I carry my camera everywhere and try to make a journal of every event, even if it is only in pictures waiting for captions.
We recently had the veterinarian come out to our farm to geld (castrate) one of our colts. There I was with a camera. If I know the person, (I did know the vet) I will ask lots of questions. I do not want to know how to do his job, but I do want to be able to answer the question, “Momma, how does the vet make a colt a gelding”. Now that may sound a little strange to you but we live on a farm. I may write a lesson on it one day. I did the same with the farrier (guy who puts on horse shoes.)
If I do not know the pro (whomever he may be) I will explain that we are homeschoolers and that I would love to use this as a learning experience and then I ask if I can ask questions. I have never had anyone say no. Most folks love to share about what they do. Especially older folks. You can make a field trip out of nearly any occasion.
